"I Was There"
Ninetieth of a series ...

Last week’s column brought a lot of comment and suggestions from radio bosses. They offered additional points to GM’s that are below.

1. A boss doesn’t like a surprise (except if it is a good one). Try to predict to your boss the business plan and stay on it. If you see a problem coming up alert your boss about it before the problem becomes reality. You do not want to hear you boss say, “I wish I had known about this problem. I might have had a solution, but now it is too late”.
2. Send your group/chief engineer to the annual NAB Radio Convention. Have him/her look for and recommend new technical advances…followed by a memo to all department heads.
3. Send your group GSM to the RAB sales meeting. Have him/her write a report to all department heads and sales people.
4. Be aware of what is happening in the industry. First thing every morning read the various e-trade publications. Be prepared…because your boss may want to discuss one of the items as the business day begins.
5. Join various organizations in your community…such as the Chamber, the Lions Club, Rotary, etc. Volunteer to serve on at least one board. This helps to publicize the station and you, the GM.
6. Not only should GM’s have an open door policy, but they should have a walk the hall policy twice a day….meaning that the GM should walk from office to office asking how things are going, suggestions, concepts, etc.
7. Be very courteous to your next door neighbors. They can be good will ambassadors for you and your stations. They will tell others in your city what a great guy/gal you are…great family, etc.
8. Have BRIEF (like two minutes) meetings with department heads. Have the meetings in the hall way, or conference room…do not use the GM’s office. Get to the point quickly. Have only one or two subjects to mention at these meetings. In other words keep the meetings quick and streamlined.
9. Send a congratulatory note…in your hand writing (not typed) to the community leaders who have done something special…..such as a potential or current client who has donated time and energy to a community project. (The business section of the Sunday newspaper is a good place to find these items.)
10. Talk to the GM of your local cable company. Pitch a concept that your sales department should sell the advertising for their local commercial inserts.
11. Arrange for your staff to have flu shots. Absence because of flu can create many problems.

I know because I WAS THERE.
