"I Was There"
Eighty-Seventh of a series ...

Prior to watching the Country Music Association awards this week something caught my eye while reading USA Today … which I believe is still the nations most read newspaper Monday through Friday. Since the awards were in New York City for the first time I assumed that there would be some sort of front page (section A) mention ... but I couldn’t find it. Matter of fact I couldn’t find a mention on the front page of their Life (section D) section…which is their entertainment news section. Mmmmmm????!!!!!

However, what caught my eye on the front page (section one) was a promo for a story about Jennifer Aniston to be found on the front page (section D) of the Life section.

Does this mean that Jennifer Aniston is more important than country music?? I have traveled millions of miles in the U.S. over the decades…and all I can attest to is the popularity of country music. It is huge. Also, without doubt Jennifer Aniston is one of the most popular TV stars ever. I have never seen a study to reveal a head to head country music vs. Aniston popularity. That would be interesting.

NYC was plastered with boards and other promotional information about the CMA Awards and artists. I noticed that during the week prior to the CMA’s there was a lot of national TV coverage…some of the heavy country artists performing. I guess I was surprised that USA Today…..the nation’s newspaper so to speak…did not give front page coverage (section A) to a country story the day of the event. It seems to me that the story was strong enough for section A. But what do I know….I’m just a broadcaster…not a news reporter/executive.

It is well known that there is not a country station in NYC. Perhaps the brilliant move of the CMA having their annual awards there will jar some broadcaster onto the country bandwagon. Certainly a 1.5 12 plus share….with excellent demos…would produce desired revenue. Perhaps better than some of the 1.5 formats that currently exist in NYC.

Being the part owner of a country station in Texas you certainly know that I WAS THERE in front of my TV an hour before the CMA award show began…just waiting for the seconds to tick away!!!!! I was not disappointed. The artists, music, and production point to the greatness of Nashville music!!!!
