"I Was There"
Eighty-Fourth of a series ...

I am exhausted just as most south Floridians are (and the rest of Florida, too). That Wicked Wilma passed right over my barrier island…where I live and work….this week. Wilma had 120 mile per hour winds. And before that Katrina the Kat-Lady grazed the island with 95 mile an hour winds before emerging in the Gulf of Mexico with her deadly cat 5 hit in New Orleans. Hey, leader of the hurricanes….GIVE US A BREAK!!! Stay away for a year, will you PLEASE!!!!

Just as the broadcasters came together after Katrina hit, so did they with Wilma. Fortunately, I was in Texas at landfall , but my friends who had radio with batteries told me about how radio really helps in a time of great need. Check this out: There was no power. Or AC. Or Internet. Or electric phones (only land lines). Or TV. OR Cable. But there was radio!!!! You get the picture. Power will return to all in two to three weeks!!! Radio is the total communicator at the moment!!!! Congratulations to radio for another outstanding job!!!

This is a quick column. I am trying to reach someone in south Florida to walk thru my place to check the Wilma damage.

However, as I leave I have some very sad news. Michael Spears has died. If you don’t know of his radio history….well, let’s just say he was a leader. I have known him for many years. You probably read and heard audio bits saluting him in various e-trades this week. His smile and talent will be missed. I know because I WAS THERE in his office many times talking radio!!! So long Michael. You did great!!!!!
