"I Was There"
Sixtieth of a series ...

This weeks radio items:

1. While monitoring Houston radio this week I heard a station make the statement “52 minutes of music per hour”. I know, because I WAS THERE!!! The promo went on to state that a competitor ran more commercials that hour. Hey, great!!! Stations actually battling each other will create more radio audience interest!!!! Hey, that is programming 101 stuff. Furthermore it is great to see that the magic number of EIGHT minutes of cumulative commercials is the correct number of minutes….that EIGHT number should help increase listenership.

2. I am looking forward to the R and Records convention in Cleveland in June. Erica Farber and her group always have a very interesting convention…and this time in the city of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I must confess it will be my first visit to the Hall. I have heard great things about it. This is going to be a well attended convention based on recent conversations with many broadcasters. Matter of fact I am meeting with quite a few broadcasters while there who are going to be the subject of this column in the near future.

3. Congratulations to Don Keyes for his excellent first Gordon McLendon article that appeared this week in RadioDailyNews.com. Great move by publisher Larry Shannon to grab him for a weekly column.

4. The first time I met Dick Clark was when he came to my office at WQXI in Atlanta pitching his new syndicated radio show. I remember the visit well. He was wearing a very blue dress shirt and tie combination. Very sharp dresser, is Mr. Clark. I also ran into Dick and his wife on a flight returning from the Caribbean not once, but twice. On the second encounter I asked him if he wanted to sell his syndication company, and he said, “NO”. At that time I was trying to buy another syndication company, but it seems as if Dick had the same idea. By the time I got back to my Atlanta consulting headquarters, I found out that that he had flown to New York and bought it from right under my nose!!! That guy moves around!!! A little over a decade ago Dick called me to ask if I knew of any radio announcers who would make good TV MC’s for some of his upcoming shows. I put him on to one comedian, but nothing happened. Dick is a terrific guy, and I hope he is doing well today!!!

Yep….the magic number is EIGHT!!!! Have a good week. KB.
