This is a continuation of last week’s
column
(38) about Mike McVay and McVay Media. I asked
Mike how many stations he has personally consulted. He said
he had never counted them, but assumed around 250 (hey, he
is catching up with me!!!). He has several consulted
stations that have been with him for 20 years…an example is
WAJI in Ft. Wayne.
I asked what recent movie he had seen and liked. He said
“Ray”. I agree!!!!! Saw it myself a few weeks ago. Some
awards will come out of that one. Everyone in show business
should see “Ray”.
Mike and Doris both like sports. Mike is originally from the
Pittsburgh area, but he lives in Cleveland. He says he
cheers for the Steelers for football, the Cavs for
basketball, the Indians of the AL and the Pirates from the
NL for baseball, the Penguins for hockey (if they ever play
again). Hollyfield has been has favorite heavyweight boxer
(although recent reports indicate he might not fight again),
and Oscar DeLaHoya is his favorite light/middle weight
favorite. Tiger for golf. Andy Roddick for mens tennis, and
Serena Williams for womens tennis. I have noticed that a lot
of broadcasters are into sports…heavily….just like Mike!!!
Competition, competition, competition. We are all in to
win!!!!
As for TV favorites Mike likes all of the cop shows…NYPD
Blue, Hill Street Blues, Streets of San Francisco. He also
likes ER.
As for favorite news shows Mike has VEEERRRRYYYY diverse
tastes. For example he likes Bill Maher, Larry King, AND The
O’Reilley Factor. WOW!!!
He is currently reading the “5 Dysfunctions of a
Business”…and a book he has recently read is by sales
consultant Ken Greenwood.
Now let’s get to food!!!! Maybe his all time favorite was
his Mom’s tuna noodle casserole which she served him on his
birthday. He brags on Doris being a very fine cook, but she
won’t cook “fancy” too often. They eat a lot of fish at
their home.
But when Mike is on the road….LOOK OUT!!!! Some of his
favorite places to dine are Balabans in the west end of St.
Louis, Crustacean in Beverly Hills (I WAS THERE, once!!),
Veritas in NYC, Ruths’ Chris anywhere (but especially in
Nashville), Alioto’s on Pier 9 in San Francisco, The Century
at the Ritz in Cleveland….and a neighborhood place
Frattello’s…which is his all time favorite. “It’s casual,
excellent food and wine, and I could walk home if I had to”.
I asked Mike how many hours a week he works. He replied:
“You know how that goes. If I am awake I am working. I start
at 6 in the morning and monitor morning shows while I work
out. The physical work day is usually from eight thirty in
the morning till six in the evening, then a business dinner,
then off to the hotel room where I check e-mail and do some
computer work while I monitor radio and watch TV…all at the
same time. What radio guy can’t so three things at once”.
INDEED, Mike. I do know how that goes!!
I asked Mike what his clients and future clients should know
about him…that they may not know!!! “I’m thinking about them
even when I am not in their city. My wife will tell you that
I can be driving down the road, think of something for one
of my clients, and grab the dictaphone to leave a message
for myself”.
I asked Mike about his most recent vacation….where did he go
to get a tan. He had saved some bucks, and had some frequent
flyer airline tickets, so he took Doris and daughters Nicole
and Jessica to Monte Carlo!!! Even radio guys have to cool
down. A vacation is needed to recharge!!! And, I can tell
you having known Mike for a long time, he is always
charged!!!! Always waiting to do some good things for
broadcasters!!!!
The next time you are in Cleveland, have lunch on Mike. You
will absolutely enjoy him!!!!
