I thank you for all the e-mails
regarding this weekly column. Your comments have been
cordial and helpful. If you have a subject you want me to
write about please e-mail me. I have been around for many
decades and have met most of the broadcasters of yesterday
and today. I have witnessed about every programming,
promotional, and sales technique imaginable….and I will be
happy to share what I know!!! Let me know what interests
you.
I got a call from a representative of the National
Association of Broadcasters last week. I am requested to be
on a panel Friday, October 8th at 10:30 AM at the Radio
Convention in San Diego. As I understand it this panel will
have consultant/specialists dealing with every form of
today’s radio…including programming, promotion, research,
etc. I have been asked to talk about consulting to managers,
owners, and presidents…and it will be my pleasure. I’ll have
a surprise or two. I will certainly comment on the recent
decision to reduce hourly commercial content. Also, I’ll
point you to a monthly magazine that will definitely help
you focus on the future. If you will be attending the NAB
convention please come to the podium to shake hands and say
hello!!!! Let’s talk some radio!!.
I have been talking to a lot of listeners from all over the
US in the last three years. . I have always liked input from
listeners and potential listeners. In upcoming columns I
will write about some of the specific items they expect from
their favorite radio stations. These discussions were very
relaxed and brief…and I placed them in my memory. I did NOT
use a computer, paper/pen or other device to record their
thoughts and opinions…I didn’t want the interview to look or
feel like an interview…but rather a casual discussion
between two people. Eighty percent of the learned
information you already know…it is the twenty percent that
can make a difference in how you treat your
customer/listener on the air. Stay tuned.
This column is brief because I have to catch a plane. But
before leaving I wanted to congratulate those from my home
state of Texas who are newly voted into the Texas Radio Hall
of Fame. This is the third year of inductees…and I know
because I WAS THERE for the first two. There are many
familiar names. Texas radio history is very interesting with
a lot of fine broadcasters. The
induction/presentation/banquet will be in San Antonio the
30th of October. Check the TRHF web site for full details.
As in the past it will be a sell out with about 400
broadcasters attending. See you there I hope!!!
