"I Was There"
Two hundred and seven of a series ...

Lots of radio meetings scheduled for the fall. Three of them are in Texas, and one in Georgia. So far my friendly keyboard writes that I am booked for:

1. A salute to Tom Merriman…the jingle champion. A tribute is set for him on Feb 12th and 13th in Dallas. He sure did make my owned, operated and consulted stations sound a lot better. Just about every broadcaster I can name used Tom’s jingles or other wonderful sounds produced by the TM Company. Can’t wait to shake his hand and say thanks.

2. The NAB Radio Show coupled with the annual R and R Convention is scheduled for September 17th, 18th, and 19th. The panelists are outstanding….and their subject matter is both contemporary and futuristic. The Austin, Texas, meeting will attract thousands of broadcasters as usual. Deals will be done in the exhibition hall for sure!!!

3. The Georgia Radio Hall of Fame induction is set in Atlanta for October 4th. The Braves baseball radio team will be honored. This has already been announced because of the death of the glib and wonderful Skip Carey just a week ago. I understand from John Long, who runs the GRHF, that the other members of the team will be there, and that Chips son, Josh, will pick up Chip’s award. The other living inductees will be announced at the ceremony….and not before. I know who I voted for (along with the above mentioned baseball radio greats) but I do not know who has won; however, I am hopeful that a person who will be sitting at my table wins....an old friend who has won many prestigious radio awards in the past. We will know more at the induction.

4. The Texas Radio Hall of Fame will be held in DFW at Billy Bobs…a treat for those who like fun. The date is October 26th, at 2 PM. The winners have been announced (check the TRHF site) and there are a lot of great broadcasters there. Lots of favorites of mine…including Michael O’Shea for whom I voted. I first heard Michael on the air at KLIF in Dallas during its super ratings period. I heard some sort of communication magic about Michael, and his listeners agreed. He came off on the air as your favorite next door neighbor. Michael has been a very good broadcaster. He was a co-founder of a group of 30 or so stations in the northwest, and he founded a radio comedy channel as well. I believe he is currently working with a prominent national group as a market manager at a northwest cluster. Good choice voters!!! He deserves to be inducted …. he broadcast in the DFW area just short of a decade.

Some of the writers to this column have mentioned that I should list the top ten improvements in the radio revolution over the decades. I’m going to think about the improvements, and in future columns do just that. Some will surprise you. No holds barred.

My brother-in-law… Bubba and I…and our group…have just signed a Time Brokerage Agreement (an LMA in radio terminology) this part week. I WAS THERE during the negotiations. Can’t say where or when until the official press release…but I don’t think you will be surprised.

Have a great weekend.
